Representations for Argumentative Practices in
Science (more
info)
Knowledge representations can be instructional artifacts that focus
students conceptual and epistemological thinking in particular
ways. We plan to explore linkages between different argumentation
and explanation tools and instructional practices that have been
developed and researched (BGuILE, SenseMaker-SCOPE, Belvedere,
ChemSense). After settling upon design principles that
synthesize...
Simulations, Animations, Visualizations, & Complex
Modeling (more
info)
Understand how to establish engaging interactions with visual
representations of data, digital illustrations, and modeling tool
to achieve learning goals. Define a set of types of tools that can
be applied to the activiities. Use visualization to enhance that
will ensure that they consider such important scientific issues as
causation vs correlation. Approach this from the perspective
o...
The Lepers: Scaling and Implementation (more info)
We are interested in bridging the gap between the research
community and the practioner. There are fundamental barriers to
scaling, e.g. understanding the role of visualization in learning,
and we will attempt to address those. We believe that one of the
ways to bring visualization and modeling to a more central focus is
to convince stakeholders of its value. We feel like we don't...
Models of Instructional and delivery frameworks for
learning (more
info)
There is a continuum of instructional frameworks for modeling
software. These range from fully integrated units to what might be
considered content free tools that can be used in various
situations. Another continuum is on time frame: short units (1-3
days) to longer more comlex ones (3weeks) The group saw a demo of
an instructional unit (legacy)designed by Vanderbilt that is more
i...
Foundational Issues in Visualization and
Modeling (more
info)
Progress on the pedagogy and technology of educational uses of
modeling can be speeded by the development of common perspectives
on how learning occurs with and about models, and on how modeling
tools can support or fail to support the needs of potential
educational users. Development of these perspectives will lead to
easier and more effective creation and adoption of learning
activities wi...
Education driving the design of new VisMod
technologies. (more info)
Educational researchers have used advanced technologies in
visualization and modeling to create powerful educational
environments. We would now like to use what we have learned, along
with the knowledge of teachers and scientists, to further advance
engineering research and develop that will create even more
powerful VisMod technology to specifically support education.
Representing scientific strategies visually (more info)
The RSSV (Representing Scientific Strategies visually) group will
identify inquiry strategies common to scientific practice, and
create multiple representations suitable for varied instructional
approaches. Partners in the RSSV include: UCLA, Northwestern
(BGuILE), UC Berkeley (WISE), Weizman Institute.
