Abstract. We propose to develop and test a prototye case-based system for helping pre- and in-service teachers develop: a) deeper understanding of the complex collaborative processes that occur in inquiry classrooms; and b) theory-based perspetives for assessing collaborative process. The system will include a variety of cases representing multiple developmental levels, instructional tasks, and subject disciplines. Our project will include developing a taxonomy of case types to provide a framework for developing and selecting cases. The system will be either web or server based and will incorporate the following features: scaffolding to support reflection and case analysis by users; a knowledge base tied to cases; case analyses provided by experts who will offer diverse analytical perspectives (anthropology, cognitive science, sociology, practicing teachers, etc.); supports for threaded converation around cases; a mechanism for recording and storing case discussion histories; tools to support community building and collaboration.
Feel free to participate in the on-going discussions about the project.
