Abstract. We will build a testbed into a kit for creating and then evaluating
social information filters, tested initially by providing CILT members
two recommendations: (1) a set of potentially interesting readings and
(2) a list of possible collaborators. Knowledge-rich profiles will be
created by CILT members visiting our site where they are asked to use
GOOGLE to recommend one reading and also to recommend one community or
newsgroup other theme members might be interested in. Above all, we
will be concerned with non-intrusiveness.

Our immediate goal is to find an effective way of
a) bringing people together with other people who share their
interests and
b) locating documents, URLs,and communities that would be of
interest to them.
A longer term goal is to provide a content recommendation device which can be placed inside a distance learning environment to advise students on contents of the learning site that they ought to consider reviewing next.
We bring software engineering skills, HCI design and usability skills,
mathematical expertise, and knowledge of educational communities to the
task.
We will create a requirements document, including a complete set of
scenarios and evaluation metrics for our system. Next, we will
create initial specifications and designs for the tool kit.
Participating partners will assess the cost of implementation, given
adequate resources we will create a prototype tool kit and test
application. Our test application will provide social information
filtering for the CILT knowledge base and membership. We will test our
application by recruiting CILT members to provide usability
information as it relates to their localized environments of interest.
There are multiple opportunities for collaboration in this project.
Our work will be useful to anyone who wishes to create a social
information filtering system for rating and navigating large
databases. By focusing on the creation of a tool kit we hope to
provide a technology for collaboration since different types of
social filters can be configured. We also see creation of a toolkit
as providing a modular design that lends itself to incremental imporovement
of particular components.
colland new opportunites for
collaboration.
