Abstract. On-line Professional Development focused on Team-based Project Work.
We are interested in developeing a framework/model for group formation
and management for online professional development as well as the tool
set necessary to implement this model/framework.
Looking at the large research done in this area in industry as well K-12
and other areas, we want to identiy what skills particpants would need
to effectively participate in online environemnts, and how to apply
these skills.

Team-based project work can be a very succesful approach to engage
learners, but too often projects using this approach fail because not
enough emphasis is put on team formation and management. This is an
even bigger challenge in online environments.
We would like to focus our research on the following skills: group
formation, trust buidling, group facilitation, group norms in diverse
environments, problem solving, status treatment, goal setting, decision
making, and communication.
We would also explore (and develop?? online tools that would support
this effort (skill-building simulations, trust-building activities,
etc.)
Access to a wide body of research as well as experts in the academic
field. Experience in team building in global corporate settings as
well as in K-12 environments, including students, teachers, and
administrators.
1. Annotated bibliography: detailed overview of the research that has
been done in the field of team formation in various disciplines (schools,
industry, etc.).
2. Bring together a panel of experts to Stanford to identify best
practices.
3. Start designing a set of skill builders (such as online simulation
activities to establish team awareness, etc.) and a team-building
process for online professional development.
4. Identify/develop online tools to implement team-building and team
management.
Our research and development could be of relevance to virtually every
member of the CILT community, and we welcome input from all members.
