Preparing and Assessing Teachers' Readiness

Assessments for Learning Breakout Report

Abstract. Our group is focused on developing teachers' (K-20) visions of how to
use technology to support more powerful forms of learning, and ways to
realize those visions through creation of assessments that embody
these changes. We want to move beyond minimum competency standards
and create assessments that accurately reflect the quality of
teacher's understandings about the potential applications of
technology to teaching and learning. Our interests include strategies
for using assessment to help re-shape pre-service, in-service, and
professional experiences (e.g., school culture)to better prepare and
support teachers in their use of technology.

Goals

1) To establish a more powerful vision of the future use of technology
in teaching and learning, and how to assess competencies related to
this vision, e.g., demonstrations of practice.
2) To understand the progression of competencies over the course of
teachers' careers.
3) Orchestrating teacher education programs in higher education to
better model effective use of technology, including in the training
of teacher educators, disciplinary specialists and administrators.
4) Supporting in-service programs by providing meaningful
assessments that reflect the key competencies for use of technology
for teaching & learning.
5) Articulate these visions across levels of the educational system.
