Jeremy:

Ok, I see. You know I have a little program for making staircases in MathWorlds. Give me a minute and I'll modify it for you to make hills. In the mean time, make yourself a graph with seven segments, each one second long. OK?

Teacher:

OK.

Narrator:

By the way, Jeremy has been illustrating through his activities the power of "just-in-time programming." JIT programming will become increasingly common as dynamic programming languages such as Java become widespread--superceding the unmodifiable, closed, monolithic programs of the past. In about 2 years since its release, there are now over 500,000 Java programmers, and 1000 new ones a day.

Jeremy:

OK I've uploaded the Hill script to your "in box." Drag it into your toolbar.

Teacher:

OK, there it is.
(drags into ToolBar)

Jeremy:

Now just set the first and middle segments to the height you want, and click the script. It will make a hill for you.

Teacher:

Hey that's neat! I'll use it in class tomorrow.

Jeremy:

And I'll add it to the MathForum archives so other teachers can use it. It'd be great if you'd put in a lesson plan to go with the script.

Teacher:

After I test it in my class, I'd be glad to!

Jeremy:

Well, my office hours are over now.

Teacher:

Oh....one more thing before you disconnect.

Jeremy:

 Yes.

Teacher:

Uh. This is a little awkward for me after that trouble I got into over persuasive phonecalls back in DC, but ....

Jeremy:

Go on...

Teacher:

I was wondering if I could ask for your support for a friend of mine who's running for School Board?

Jeremy:

 ....Uhhhh, look, gotta go!!!!
