description
We are a video game development studio with significant experience in our industry. We think we can make learning fun and deeply involve students by using compelling 3D worlds - to the point where they would rather be learning than playing video games. As an example, we have created a demonstration based on a forest environment where it is possible to see the world from one of many animal's viewpoints. This platform, LifeSense, can be used for lessons in biology, ecology and sociology. Further, we believe it will motivate independent learning.
Theoretical
background
Over 75% of all children under 16 play video games weekly. We are attempting to find ways to channel this focus into a more educational one. We have been following the research of SRI (especially "authentic" tasks defined as part of Technology and Education Reform at http://www.ed.gov/pubs/EdReformStudies /EdTech/overview.html) and others to find matches for our work.
Challenges Our biggest challenge is creating educational tools that are ultimately as fun and immersive as games. We want children to *want* to learn in the worlds we build. We have the basic technical skill set to do this, but the design of such a project will be complex. We are eager to hear input from the CILT community, and encouraged by projects such as "Frog Island" on this page.
Partnership We are interested in finding partners in creating educational 3D worlds. Of particular interest is a partner with educational design background. All comments on our work are welcome.
